Joseph T. Maderia, 86, a resident of Wakeman, passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Elmcroft Nursing Home, Lorain, following a long illness. He was born May 21, 1926, in Grompian, Pennsylvania, to the late Patrick and Anna (nee Tutko) Maderia.
Mr. Maderia has been a resident of Wakeman since 2000. He resided in Oberlin from 1978 to 2000, moving from Lorain. He was a maintenance supervisor for Ford Motor Company, retiring after over 30 years of service. Mr. Maderia was a World War II United States Navy Veteran, where he served on the U.S.S. Merrick in the Pacific Fleet. His tour of duty took him to numerous Pacific Islands and to Japan at the end of World War II. He was honorably discharged, June 18, 1946. Joseph was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, South Amherst. His other memberships include the Knights of Columbus Council 4891, Amherst, 4th Degree Lt. Francis McManus Assembly #811, Amvets Post 22, Vermilion, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1662, Amherst. Joe enjoyed golfing, hunting, camping, gardening and traveling.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carrie (nee Anderson); daughters, Cathy (Al) Murillo of Amherst, Jean (Jim) Raible of Elyria, Lou Ann (Chuck) Hayslett of Vermilion, Joyce (Dennis) Marks of Wakeman, Jackie Grospitch of North Olmsted; son, Pat (Jill) Maderia of Boca Raton, Florida; brothers, Patrick (Carole) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Thomas (Marianne) of Elyria, Larry (Diane) of Amherst; sisters, Frances Anderson of Amherst, Patty Klinar of Lorain and Cecelia King of Amherst; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Emery Maderia; and sisters, Agnes Meyers and Rose Marie King.
Family will receive friends Friday, March 15, 2013, 4 to 8 P.M., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. Closing prayers will be 10:15 A.M., Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the funeral home, followed by an 11 A.M., Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst.
Reverend Lawrence N. Martello will will be the Celebrant. Entombment, with military rites conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard, will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
