Vinton Leslie Spencer, 83, of Yuba City died July 2, 2004, at Emmanual Health Care Center in Yuba City.

Born in Smartville, he was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 71 years.

He was retired from Petrolane Gas Company.

He attended Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church, was a life member of Twin Cities Lions Club, Peach Bowl Lions Club and the Peach Bowl Branch of Sons in Retirement. In addition, he was charter president of the Twin Cities Lions Club and a member of Native Sons of the Golden West.

During the 1930s through 1950s he played baseball for the Yuba City Bears and Marysville Giants and was later inducted into the Northern California Old-Timer Sports Association Hall of Fame.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War, receiving a silver star for action in Iwo Jima, and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel, retiring in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Spencer of Yuba City; a daughter, ...; three sons,...; two sisters, Alice Pihera of Yuba City and Luann Freeman of Cora, Wyo.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl A. Spencer, Robert E. Spencer and Arthur L. Spencer.

Services: A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church, 700 Washington Ave., Yuba City. A private inurnment will be held at later date at Sierra View Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Sierra View Mortuary.
