Juanita DeWalt Merriell was born August 31, 1908 in Navasota, Texas the third of five children. A third generation Texan whose ancestor, Napoleon Bonaparte DeWalt brought his family to Texas from South Carolina in 1845 and later died while serving as Colonel in Hood's Brigade. Mrs. Merriell moved to Dallas in 1951 having previously lived in Houston, Texas. She won a scholarship to SMU, but chose to attend Port Arthur College. She had a long-standing career in various business fields and served as an Executive of Gulf Coast Investment Corporation before moving to Dallas to marry Howard Sinclair Merriell following an earlier marriage. She worked as a legal secretary and completed her career by serving as an administrative assistant to Methodist Bishops' Pope and Stowe. An active member and volunteer at University Park Methodist Church, she also served as a Docent at Old City Park with the Dallas County Heritage Society and tutored students at Benjamin Franklin School during the integration of Schools in Dallas. She was a member of the Jane Douglas Chapter of the DAR through her ancestor, Philemon Waters, who fought with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. She bore two children, Joe Marshall Adcock, Jr, deceased, and Betty Adcock Littlejohn. She is survived by four grandchildren, nine great-grand-children, and two great-great-grandchildren. She died March 16, 2011 at age 102 surrounded by the caring staff at Traymore Nursing Home. The family wishes to express gratitude for their excellence.
