Francis Island Chaney was born to the union of Charlie and Ida Combs on August 3, 1937. Frances was one of 13 siblings: Charlie, James, Roy, Walter, Ralph-Bobby, Cora Lee, Lola Mae, Frankie Darrell, Joe Louis, Nina, Beatrice, Roberta, who all preceded her in death.

Francis was educated within the Detroit Public Schools system and graduated from Northern High. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and remained faithful to her belief and strong spiritual foundation throughout her life. She recently joined God's Grace Missionary Baptist Church where her nephew Rev. Dwight Mahone is the Pastor.

Frances was employed for 30 years with Northville State Hospital. She was a union representative and enjoyed helping her fellow co-workers with union issues. She had a very successful career and when she retired, she spent her time traveling. Her favorite pastime was taking the bus to a variety of hotel/casinos for gaming and entertainment.

Frances did not have any natural children. However, she cared for many of her nieces and nephews. Most of her family and friends knew her as Fran. She was down to earth, lively, and had a heart for her siblings. She was outspoken and knew how to get her point across. But most of all Frances was also known for being very generous in helping out where she could with many families that needed help.
