Lived in Illinois and moved to Missouri in a covered wagon. As a little boy he lived around the Osage River (Brownington). He worked for the Clay Tile Factory in Deepwater when he was 15 years old. He later moved to Oliver, Illinois with his step-mother to help keep a store. It was while he was in Oliver that he meet Elizabeth Nelson(Hilling), she was 18 and he was 26 years of age. The first three children were born in a little, new home that Harlen built in Oliver, Illinois. Then Later the family moved to Ladue Missouri and Harlen and his brother Dave Owned a store there and had the post office. Harlen and his family have lived in Ladue Mo. twice, Humansville Mo., Cliquot Mo., and then on a eighty acre farm southwest of Bolivar Mo., and then Harlen bought a grocey store in Bolivar and he ran it for 30 years till he retired.
