Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers, and commanded them during the war. He later served as Provost Marshal General of the Department of the South. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on February 24, 1865.
