John Wesley Davis
Birth: Apr. 16, 1799
Death: Aug. 22, 1859

A medical doctor from Indiana. A politician, he served as a Democrat in the 24th, 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th Congresses spanning 1835-1846. Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives 1845-1846. He negotiated Indian treaties, and was appointed by President Polk as US Commissioner to China in 1848. Appointed by President Pierce as Governor of the Oregon Territory from 1853-1854. (bio by: RB)

Dr. John W. Davis was born in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He came to Carlisle in 1825. He had previously practiced medicine in Old Town, Maryland and came to Carlisle at the urging of Phillip Hoover.
