Known for his medical thrillers, he will be remembered for penning the bestselling novel "Extreme Measures" (1991), which was made into a 1996 motion picture adaptation starring Hugh Grant and Gene Hackman. Born Michael Stephen Palmer, he studied pre-med at Wesleyan University and attained his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He went onto practice internal and emergency medicine in Boston. Inspired by Doctor Robin Cook (author of "Coma" 1977), Palmer began his writing career with his penning of his debut novel "The Sisterhood" in 1982. He would go onto write more than fifteen books over the next 30 years. He died of complications from a heart attack and stroke.
