Leander was the only son of Albion Huckins and Irene H. Bridges. He was born in Marion Maine and resided there for the better part of his life. AT the time of his growing up through his early adulthood, Marion was a small town with a general store, hotel and boarding house consisting of farmers and loggers. Marion is located near the Cathance Stream, and there was a small mill operation early owned by John C. Allen, and later operated by George Frost from Milltown.

At age 24 he married Sarah E. Richards of Whiting Maine. The wedding took place on Dec 11, 1874 in Dennysville and a son, their only child, Alva L. Huckins was born in 1875. The year of his marriage he purchased land from Nathan Jones and built a small house.

The couple separated and by 1883 divorce papers were filed. Leander raised his son with the help of his parents who lived nearby and later a housekeeper, Lionnia (Garnett) Bridges, who had been married to Leander's cousin. She came with three children.

In the 1910 census in Marion, Leander was age 57, divorced, and Lionnia D., 42, married. There were also two boarders in the household, William Maloney and Charles Beverly.

Leander and Lionnia were married on May 30, 1913 in Marion. Leander was 60 and bride was 44, 2nd marriage each, both of Marion Maine and married by Rev Gordon Tucker of Marion. Lionnia was adopted; name of her parents on the marriage record were George W. Garnett of Island Falls, born in Cooper Maine and mother was Amelia Noddings of Richmond New Bruswick born in Baring Maine.

The mill in Marion closed down as did the rail line and Leander found work as a teamster. He sold his home and moved to nearby Dennysville a short time later. In the 1920 census in Dennysville Leonader S. was renting a home and was age 67, millman and Lionnia was 50. Also in the household was Leander's mother Irene Huckins age 90 and Lionnia's daughter, Ellen E. Keene age 30, and her young children Byron E. Dora L. and Agnes. Leander was the only one in the household who was working.

Eventually the couple moved to Brewer along with his step-daughter and family, presumably to find work.

Leander found work in Hermon Maine where he was working at the time of his death. His obit from the Bangor Daily News indicates he died at home in Brewer, age 74 yrs and 8 mos. He was survived by his wife Lionnia and step-daughter Ellen of Brewer, son Alva of New Hampshire, and a sister Annie York of Derby Maine. His funeral was conducted by the Salvation Army with a large attendance of friends.

His burial was in the Bangor public lots of the Mt Hope Cemetery. These graves are included in both Mt. Hope Cemetery and Bangor City Cemetery memorials and I am unsure in which location they should be entered. The Bangor City Cemetery is under the management of Mt. Hope Cemetery and you enter through the Mt Hope gates. The burials in the section where Leander was buried do not have stones.
