The youngest son of Nancy5 Colvin [Benedict4, Thomas3, Samuel2, John1] and her first husband, a Mr. Spencer [first name yet unknown], Allen had two known brothers: Daniel F. and Benedict C. Spencer. He also had three half-siblings, Hannah, Huldah and Thomas Colvin Hathaway, from his mother's second marriage to Thomas Hathaway,

Allen and his wife, Lucy Ann Lewis, were the parents of seven known children: Daniel F., Nancy C., Julia Ann, Lucelia, Lewis W., Charles C. and George Washington Spencer. The three oldest were born in Connecticut.

From Connecticut, the family moved to Nassau, Rensselaer County, where they appear on the 1840 census. They settled in Hoosick Falls in 1844, according to the "Landmarks of Rensselaer County" family sketch of his son Charles.
