SKEMP, Colonel Samuel C. Jr. 88, of Largo, died Oct. 24, 2013. Following a 30 year career in the U.S. Army where he was an advisor to Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Richard M. Nixon, he moved to Pinellas County where he was a master gardener. He helped secure the land for the Pinellas County Botanical Gardens and then assisted in developing it. He logged more than 20,000 volunteer hours and designed and maintained their rose garden. Colonel Skemp was a graduate of West Point and Johns Hopkins University. He set up the space shuttle simulator in Houston and helped train the shuttle astronauts. Survivors include his son, Sam (Rita); 2 grandsons, Sammy (Meghan) and Jonathan; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Sonja.
