JOHN FRANCIS HANSCOM of Lancaster was born on March 13, 1929 in Houston, TX to Fleta (Talley) & Frank Hanscom and passed away at Baylor Hospital in Dallas, TX on October 26, 2006.
He was preceded in death by his parents & his stepfather Christopher Jones (a major in the Air Force).
John married Doris Johnston on Feb. 9, 1952.
He attended Rice University & North Texas University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in History & Government & a Masters Degree in History. He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta History Fraternity.
John taught school in Friona, Lancaster, and Highland Park for a total of 34 years. He also taught classes at Mountain View & Cedar Valley Colleges. He worked at Sanger-Harris & was a camp counselor at Scout camps & summer camps. John was an Eagle Scout. While teaching, he had debate teams and took a group of students to Washington DC to see government in action.
John served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany for 18 months. He was an instructor and a photographer.
John was well liked & respected by his students and co-workers. He retired in 1988 but maintained his interest in Civil War history. He also enjoyed building model ships from research. He drew his own ship plans. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Lancaster & the Texas State Teachers Association. He was a member of Windsor Park Baptist Church in DeSoto.
He was a loving husband, father & grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years Doris Hanscom; son Friedrick (Fred) Hanscom; daughter Stephanie Anne Fitzgerald & husband Cary Doyle Fitzgerald; grandchildren Andrew Wayne & Robert Aaron Fitzgerald; step-brother Dr. Lloyd Jones.
He will be sorely missed by family & friends, but his legacy will live on through others.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday (10/29/06) in Edgewood Cemetery in Lancaster. Donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association or the American Heart Association.
