Helen is the daughter of John & Borghild (née Eckern) Alder of Yankton South Dakota.
She and her sisters, Margaret & Janice, grew up in the rural South Dakota village of Mission Hills, where her father operated the local grain elevator. She often shared many fond childhood memories of the joys of living in a small, close-knit, rural community in the nation's heartland.
Helen earned her degree from Southern State Teaching College in Springfield, S.D. and taught in state elementary schools.
In 1947 she married the love of her life, Thomas McGowan, in Kansas City, Kansas, and devoted the rest of her life to husband and their 5 children. In the early 1960's they moved to Simsbury, Conneticut, became parishioners of St. Mary's R. C. Church and she came to relish the changing of the seasons, becoming a true New Englander.
Aside from her love of animals, Helen is remembered for her overwhelming love of home and family and making every holiday and every family event a joyous celebration.
At the time of her passing she had 8 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren.
✞ Helen Marie McGowan is buried with Thomas, her husband of 55 years, at Simsbury Cemetery in Conneticut.
