George W Higgins joined for duty and enrolled as a Private for 3 years service at Sumner, Illinois on Jul 20, 1861 at age 20 in Company "H" 11th Missouri Infantry*. On Jan-Feb 1862 roll is listed as absent sick at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. On detached service in Pioneer Corpp since March 1, 1863 through December 31, 1863 when he was discharged for re-enlistment on January 1, 1864 in Veteran Volunteer regiment at LaGrange, Tennessee. On Mar-Apr 1864 roll listed as absent without leave since April 26, 1864. On May-June 1864 roll he is listed as sick at Memphis, Tennessee since June 20, 1864. On Nov-Dec 1864 roll listed as sick at Nashville, Tennessee since December 15, 1864. Mustered out January 15, 1866.
Enlistment declaration states he was born in Crawford County, Illinois. Has dark eyes, Light hair, light complesion and is six feet tall. Stated his occupation as a Farmer.
*At time of enlistment organization was called Captain Oldman's Company First Missouri Rifles.
