Civil War Union Army Officer. He served during the Civil War as Captain and commander of the Landis Independent Battery, Pennsylvania Light Artillery, which was organized at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in response to the Confederate invasion of their state in June 1863. It was mustered in on June 27, 1863, and was mustered out July 30, 1863. Before that the unit was the Philadelphia Light Militia Artillery, Battery A, which was Federalized to meet the threat. Captain Landis is buried in the General John F. Reynolds family plot in Lancaster Cemetery, having married General Reynold's sister, Kate, in 1854.
