James was the eldest son of John and Hannah McFaden McMahan of Pennsylvania with siblings: Nancy (1826), Margaret(1828), Thomas(1833), George(1837), Benjamin (1839), Ann(1941), and Andrew(1843). He married Percida "Percy" Osborn on 28 February 1854 in Wood County, and they had children: William T., Elly, John, and Matilda. James was a farmer. He died from arterio-sclerosis a month after the death of his wife.
