from the Republican for July 25, 1957:
Mrs. Mary Matilda (Tillie) Grubbs of Lizton died Thursday noon at the Clermont Heights Nursing Home where she had been a patient for several weeks. She had been ill since last October.
Mrs. Grubbs was born 86 years ago at the family homestead south of Lizton, the daughter of William and Rachel Baker Leach. She was the seventh child of a family of twelve children.
She attended Central Normal College and Indiana State Normal, and taught in the public schools of Indiana and Illinois for 28 years. On June 1, 1904, she married Albert A. Grubbs of Casey, Illinois, who was also a school teacher. On September 6, 1904, he succumbed to typhoid fever.
In 1925, Mrs. Grubbs returned to Lizton and made her home with her sister, the late Miss Oma Leach. She was an active member of the Christian Church at Lizton and taught in the Sunday School there.
Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at the Lizton Christian Church with the Rev. Maurice Ankrom officiating. Burial was in the K. of P. Cemetery there. Baker Funeral Home was in charge.
Survivors include three adopted daughters, Mrs. Edith Linton and Mrs. Mildred Rawlings, both of Lizton, and Mrs. Loretta Land of Pittsboro, a niece and three nephews.
Note: The obituary of her sister, Margaret Elizabeth Leach, indicates she adopted the daughters so perhaps the two sisters raised the three children together.
