Arent Schuyler Crowninshield
Birth: Mar. 14, 1844
Death: May 27, 1908
Philadelphia County
Pennsylvania, USA

United States Navy Admiral. A May 1863 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he was assigned to the "USS Ticonderoga", and served with the ship during the later stages of the Civil War, seeing action in the January 1865 combined Union Army-Navy assault and capture of Fort Fisher, North Carolina. After the war he served in various ship commands, rising to the rank of Captain by the 1880s. When the United States Navy launched the battleship "USS Maine" in 1895, he was her first captain, relinquishing command after two years to become Chief of the Navigation Bureau. When the "Maine" exploded in Havana Harbor in February 1898, and the United States declared war in Spain, he was appointed to the Naval War Board, and had a large part in the United States Naval operations planning that resulted in resounding victories like the Battle of Manila Bay (May 1, 1898). He was eventually promoted to Rear Admiral before his retirement from the service. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
