US Congressman. He was only 16 years old when he enrolled in the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 9, 1861. Mustered in as a Private in Company G, he served a full three years in the field in a regiment that saw action at battles such as Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Cold Harbor. He was honorably mustered out when his enlistment expired on September 7, 1864. After the war he established himself as real estate and insurance businessman in Atlantic City, and served as that city's Mayor from 1868 to 1872, in 1874, and in 1875. In 1892 he was elected to represent New Jersey's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, filling the seat vacated by Congressman James Buchanan, and served from March 4, 1893 to March 3, 1913. In 1912 he attempted to be elected for an eleventh consecutive term, but was defeated by Congressman John Thompson Baker. He passed away in Indians Mills, New Jersey in 1921. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
