James was born ca. 1865 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN, the son of Martin Cunningham and Ellen Winsley. He married Mary A. E. (Dungan) Roster on August 25, 1890 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., IN. He died while serving in the military on the island of Luzon in The Philippines.

James and Mary were the parents of two children:
1. Martin J. Cunningham
2. Margaret Cecilia (Cunningham) Spratt

Dysentery--... July 23: Company G, Thirty-first Infantry, James J. Cunningham. ...
