Vermont House, 1832-33. Vermont Senate, 1838-39. Political aspirations thwarted by fracturing of Democratic party over slavery. Married Mrs. Julietta Staniford Robinson, widow of William Robinson, October, 1847. No children. Governor, 1853-54. Selected by Legislature when Robinson as Democratic nominee, Erastus Fairbanks as Whig and a Free Soil candidate all failed to receive Constitutionally required 50 percent of popular vote. Last Democrat elected Governor until 1960, a streak of Republican Governors that lasted more than 100 years. Delegate, Democratic national convention, 1860. Died while attending convention. Death attributed to apoplexy.
