He was born in 1858 as Hindrik Dijkema in the country village Stedum, in the mid northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of Hindrik Hindriks Dijkema (29 y, daylaborer) and Aafke Harms Schoonoord.
On 19 May 1884 the 25 years aged laborer Hendrik Dykema, his father Hendrik Dykema (54, laborer), his mother Aafke (55), his unknown relatives Tedde (30, farmer) and Gerrit Dykema (40, laborer) arrived on the SS W.A. Scholten at the port of New York, Castle Garden.
On 24 December 1887 the 29 years aged Hendrik Dykema married in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois to the one year younger Dora Gansefeld.
In September 1888 they had in the Dutch truck farmrs settlement of Roseland, nowadays a southern district of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois their only child, daughter Effie Dykema.
In June 1900 Henry Dykema (42 y, born in the Netherlands), his wife Dore Dykema (40, June 1860, Netherlands, immigrated in 1887, mother of one living child) and their daughter Effie (12, Illinois) were living in Homewood village, Thornton Township, just south of chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
In 1920 Henry Dykema (61) and his wife Dora (60) were living at their own home in still Thornton [Township], just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
In 1930 Henry Dykema (71) and his wife Dora (70) were still living in Thornton [Township], Cook County, Illinois.
Henry Dykema died in June 1933 at the age of 74 years in Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois. His widow Dora died there too in May 1935 at the age of 76 years.
