Artemas served as a Private in Company E, 16th Regiment, Vermont volunteers during the Civil War. He mustered in October 23, 1862, and mustered out August 10, 1863.

After the war, Artemas returned to Vermont, where he had a farm in South Windham. He was a member of the South Windham Baptist church.
