Leroy enlisted on August 19, 1861, then mustered in as a Private in Company I of the 4th Vermont Infantry Regiment on September 21, 1861. He was later promoted to Corporal and then Sargeant. He re-enlisted December 15, 1863, and was reported missing in action at the Battle of the Wilderness (near Spotsylvania, Virginia) on May 5, 1864. He died on May 7th as a result of wounds received in the battle. Leroy may be the person listed as "Serg't S G Kellogg" from Company I, reported as wounded in the Rutland Weekly Herald (Rutland, Vermont) on May 19, 1864.
