Edward Talbot Thackeray
Birth: Oct. 19, 1836
Death: Sep. 3, 1927

Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Broxbourne, England, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Bengal Engineers, Bengal Army. During actions at Delhi, India, on September 16, 1857, 2nd Lieutenant Thackeray and his men were under attack from heavy enemy musketry fire. When an ammo magazine enclosure was set on fire, 2nd Lieutenant Thackeray risked his life by rushing forward and extinguished the fire saving the ammunition from explosion. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on April 29, 1862. Remaining in the British Army, he retired a Colonel in 1888. He died at age 90 in Garessio, Italy. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
