William Marcum Died At Family Home in Russ
After a long illness of heart disease, William Marcum died at his home in Russ, November 4th, aged almost 78 years.
Mr. Marcum was born in Wayne County, Kentucky, December 15,1847. He came to Missouri in 1871 and lived for a time in Wright County, coming to Laclede County about twenty-eight years ago and has lived on several different farms in the Russ neighborhood but has lived in Russ for several years past.
He was married to Miss Sarah Adkins January 7, 1866. To this union thirteen children were born, eight of whom preceded the father in death. Those living are Mrs. Charles Doty, and Belfrey Marcum of the county; Mrs. Noah Williams and Jesse Marcum of Wright County, and Mrs. Eliza Simpson of Oklahoma. Mrs. Marcum died August 17, 1903. Mr. Marcum was married to Mrs. Caroline Oquinn August 18,1905, who survives him.
He gave his heart to the Lord many years ago and was a Free Will Baptist in faith.
He had a great aptitude for mirth and was always called "Laughing Billy" by his many friends because of his jovial disposition. He stood firm in his convictions for what he though was right.
The funeral services were held Wednesday of last week at 11 o'clock in the White Oak Pond church, conducted by Rev. William Sheets of Wright County. Interment was in the cemetery there.
The choir sang "Beautiful Isles of Somewhere," "Abide With me" and "No Night There."
Mr. Marcum enlisted in the Union army and served in Company I, 30th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry.
There was a very large crowd present to pay their last respect to the deceased.
