Henry J. Schnebly died peacefully at home on April 15, 2009. Henry, a fourth generation rancher in the Fairview district, was born on the same site as where his life ended. Henry was born January 22, 1918, the son of Fred C. and Marguerite (Nelson) Schnebly. Henry graduated from Ellensburg High School in 1936. He went on to study business at the University of Washington, graduating in 1940. In 1947, Henry married the love of his life, Frances Wilson.

Henry was instrumental in introducing Simmental cattle to the region, holding the breeds first production sale in the Northwest in 1971. He was active at the county, state and national levels in a number of agricultural organizations. In 1958, Henry was named Kittitas County Cattleman of the Year, as well as Washington State Cattleman of the Year. In 1964, he was named Kittitas County Soil and Water Conservation Districts Farmer of the Year. Henry enjoyed sporting events. He was an avid supporter of C.W.U. athletics. One of his greatest joys was watching his grandchildren's sports endeavors. Henry was especially fond of tennis, playing well into his eighties. In 1979, Henry headed up a group that established the Ellensburg Racquet Club. He managed that facility for several years before the club was donated to the city of Ellensburg. Henry's hobbies included morning coffee with friends, fishing, family outings, his Monday night poker buddies, and his 6.00 a.m. tennis group. Henry attended every performance of the Ellensburg Rodeo up until the past couple of years. For several years he volunteered in various capacities at the rodeo.

Henry is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Frances; children. Fred (June), Becky, Jim (Becky), and Todd (Paula) grandchildren: Diane (Anthony), Alice (Kenny), Grace (Si), Erin, Alex and Coleman; great grandchildren, Camdyn and Marjorie. He was proceeded in death by a brother Frederick, and sisters Waneta and Loila. A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church Wednesday, April 22 at 1-30 p.m. Memorials may be made to Hospice Friends, the Kittitas County 4 - H Endowment Fund or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the care of Steward & Williams Tribute Center, Ellensburg, WA..
