The event featured a .9-mile ocean swim in relatively rough conditions, a 28-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run on a hazy, hot morning.
Dr. Edward West, a partner with Hastings at Palmetto Pediatrics in North Charleston, said those who worked with Dr. Hastings view his death as "a family loss" and that he was very dear to the staff at the practice.
