Matthew was born in England about 1595. Probably in Sandwich. He married in England, a woman named Jane. In 1637, Matthew and Jane came to New England with four children, Matthew, John, Hannah and Elizabeth. They settled in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where Matthew served as Herdsman in 1649 & 1655. He was Town Crier in 1648-49 & 1657, and Town Messenger in 1666. He was made freeman in 1645. He died before 1681. His son Matthew was granted administration of his estate that year.
