Enrique Tierno Galván was born in Madrid, Spain on February 19, 1986 and died also in Madrid on January 19, 1986. He was one of Spain’s most liked and important political figure during his latter years as mayor of Madrid, during which time, he was kindly referred to as “El Abuelo” (The Grandfather). He was a Doctor of Law and Philosophy, and was University Professor of Political Science from 1948-1953 in the University of Murcia, and from 1953-1965 at the University of Salamanca.He wrote many books concerning sociology, history, culture, and politics.Always a defender of Democracy, he was incarcerated several times during the Franco Fascist rule over Spain.Once Franco died in 1975, his political career was renewed and he became a popular figure within Spain.In Spain’s first democratic elections (June 15, 1975) he obtained a seat in the Spanish Parliament representing Madrid, while being a member of the “Partido Socialista Popular-PSP” (Popular Socialist Party- PSP), which he himself had started. In April of 1978, he joins the “Partido Socialista Obrero Espańol-PSOE” (Socialist Workers Party- PSOE) and became honorary president of said political group. In the first municipal democratic elections (April 1979), he won the race to become Mayor of Madrid. He was re-elected for the same post in April 1983, earning him the respect of all politicians during this time. During his almost seven years as Mayor of Madrid, he made many important reforms, which made Madrid grow economically and with a higher standard of living. One of his major achievements was to be the man responsible to write the preamble of the Spanish Constitution in 1978. (bio by: Fernando)
