US Senator and US Congressman. He attended the common schools and served as a messenger during the Civil War. He was the son of James Wilson, also a member of the US House of Representatives from Indiana. John studied law at Wabash College and was admitted to the bar in 1878 and commenced practice in Crawfordsville. Entering politics in 1880, he was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives.When President Chester Alan Arthur appointed him as receiver of public monies at Spokane Falls and Colfax in the Washington Territory a move to Spokane was required. When Washington was admitted to the Union, Wilson was elected as a Republican in the 1888 election to the US House of Representatives for the 51st United States Congress. He was reelected to the following two terms and resigned in 1895 to become a Senator. He was elected to fill a vacancy in the Senate, but failed in his reelection bid. After leaving the Senate, he published the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. (bio by: Tom Todd)
