Civil War Union Brigadier General. Captain of Knox County Invincibles 1861; Major 1861; Lieutenant Colonel 1862; Full Colonel 1862. Brigadier General 1863. Born in Winchester, Kentucky he was at the battle of the Wilderness, Cheat Mountain, the Shenandoah valley campaigns and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he faced Pickett's Charge, his daughter writes that his hat was filed with bullet holes and his life was saved by coins and a daguerreotype in his pocket. He resigned before the end of the war and returned to Mt. Vernon, Indiana. He died in a train wreck on the way to Jeffersonville on September 27, 1871 while campaigning for Horace Greeley in the presidential race.
