Chesley's Civil War Service Records were found at the McClung Library in Knoxville, TN. They indicate that he died in a hospital near Rogersville, TN, May 23, 1865 of typhoid fever. He fought for the Union, mustered in at Camp Nelson, KY, and was in Co. C of the 9th TN Cav. At least two of his sisters named a child Chesley for the brother they lost.
His mother, Eleanor Holt left a will in which she left each of her 8 daughters money that she expected to receive from "U.S. Pension in arrears" as a result of the death of her only son Chesley Holt.
