Maori Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he served as a Captain in the 43rd Monmouthshire, Regiment of Foot, British Army. On June 21, 1864 at Tauranga, New Zealand, Captain Smith led an attack on the enemy's position. Although he was wounded before reaching the rifle-pits, he jumped down and began a hand-to-hand fighting with the enemy until his men assisted him in securing the position. For most prestigious leadership in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and later achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He died at age 60 in Breely, Ireland.
