She was born on Aug. 9, 1920, in Newport News and was a resident of Hampton.
Shirley was born a Crabberlived a Crabber and died a Crabber.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hampton.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Machen Lewis Sr.; her brothers, Thomas Whiting and Charles Whiting; daughter, Shirley Lewis; and daughter-in-law, Patsy Lewis.
Surviving members of her family include her sons, Arthur Machen Lewis Jr. of Dunn, N.C., George Cameron Lewis, and Randolph Whiting Lewis and his wife, Heidi; daughter, Kathleen Hayden Lewis; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at First Presbyterian Church of Hampton. Interment will be private.
The family would like to thank the Shelton on the Bay staff for taking such great care of Shirley.
