Joseph Phillips, a 16 year resident of Covelo and lifelong activist of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, died at his home Aug 24, 1984. Mr Phillips was born October 4, 1891 in Cornwall England. He was 92 at the time of his death. Mr Phillips was graduated from the Strode Academy, a SDA school in Kansas. He later attended Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska for his BA and Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA for his Master's in secondary education. Mr Phillips served as a missionary 17 years in Burma. For 12 years he was President of the Burma Union Training School. Mr Phillips career in education continued with service as Principal for 6 years at the Arizona Academy SDA. Up until age 88 Mr Phillips never declined a call to service as interim pastor of the SDA churches temporarily without clergy. He was pastor of the Covelo SDA Church for 4 years prior to his retirement in 1982. He also served at verious times as pastor of the McKinleyville and Crescent City churches. Mr Phillips was active in the Northern California Coonference of SDA for more than 42 years, and was especially noted for the energy he brought to the task of building new churches. Phillips leaves his spouse, Marian H Phillips of Covelo; his son, Winston Phillips of Roseburg, OR; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
