History - The Barkers were originally converts from England where their first son Peter was born. Having accumulated enough funds in Massachusetts to proceed with the journey west they joined the Isaac Canfield company at Florence, Nebraska. Another son, James, was born en route.

After living in Salt Lake City for a short time the family moved to Cache Valley, but early in the year 1875, they moved to Panguitch, Garfield County. A year later they joined a small group of pioneers who were being sent to establish the town of Escalante. It took two months to complete the journey of sixty miles. Mary Alice was now seventeen and it is reported that she was the first female to enter the future townsite, when her father pulled his wagon ahead of the wagon train.

In 1879 Mary Alice became the wife of Don Carlos Shurtz, Jr. This was the second wedding in Escalante, her brother, Peter, and Elinor Heaps being the first couple married there. Mrs. Schurtz was chosen by the Relief Society in the community to go to Salt Lake City for the purpose of studying midwifery, which she did under the tutorship of Dr. Ellis Shipp. When the course was completed she received a certificate to practice obstetrics. During the years Mary Alice served as midwife she delivered five hundred and seventy-five babies. Many trips were made in a buckboard or on horseback, not only in Escalante, but in Boulder and Widtsoe. She was the mother of eight children. At the time of her death, in 1952, she was Escalante's oldest citizen being then ninety-two years of age.
