| Birth: | Dec. 3, 1830 | | Death: | Jan. 25, 1896 | Artist. Lord Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough in the north of England, his father was a doctor and his grandfather had been the physician of the Russian royal family. He entered the Berlin School of Art in his early teens, and after a year enrolled in the Art Academy of Florence. The Nazarene and Italian Renaissance were big influences on his early career. His 17-foot-long work "Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna Carried in Procession Through the Streets of Rome" created a sensation in 1855, and established his reputation as an artist overnight. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1864, became a full Academician in 1868, and became President of the Academy in 1878, the same year he was knighted. He served as PRA for almost two decades, and his presidency was a time of unrivalled success and prestige. A life-long bachelor, Leighton was energetic and very hardworking. He was made a baronet in 1886, and was created Baron Leighton of Stretton just days before his death. One of his most recognized and widely-reproduced works is "Flaming June", painted in 1895.
