Mrs. James H. Platz, old time resident of Washington County, was called to her reward on last Sunday evening, March 9. She was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, coming to this country and settling at Atchison, Kansas where she met and married the late James H. Platz June 29, 1869.
With her husband she came to this county in 1880 where she has resided and where her family of four children, two sons and two daughters, grew to maturity. These children are Mrs. Mary McCracken, deceased; Dr. Chas. Platz, of Casper, Wyo; Harry Platz, of Clay Center, Nebr. and Mrs. Leonora Christensen of Blair. The surviving members of the family were present at the last sad rites and did all that human kindness and thought could do to show their respect for the deceased, the mother whom they had loved and who had done so much for them.
The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the home on west Washington street where a great gathering of friends were present to do honor to the departed and show the sympathy for the surviving children. The body was laid to rest in the Blair cemetery beside the loved ones who had already gone before.
“Grandma” Platz, as many of us knew here, was a woman of deep Christian character, loved and respected by all who knew her and her life was an example well worthy of emulation. She was a consistent member of the Baptist church and was a regular attendant as long as her health and strength would permit. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge in which she was held in much esteem and in both these organizations as well as in her circle of loyal friends she will be greatly missed.

Mrs. James H. Platz passed away at about 8 o’clock Sunday evening at the ripe age of 83 years, 3 months and 18 days. She fell again last Thursday and the shock was too much for her and she grew steadily worse until relieved by death. The funeral was held at the house at 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Bertha Eleanore Schollert was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, November 20, 1840, and came to this country in 1869. On June 29th, of that year she was united in marriage to James H. Platz at Atchison, Kansas, where Mr. Platz was then manager of a large ranch for a Chicago syndicate. In 1872 they moved to Omaha and eight years later to this city. Four children were born to them, Mrs. Mary McCracken, whose death occurred in 1914, Dr. Charles Platz, of Casper, Wyo., Harry Platz, of Clay Center, Neb. and Mrs. Henry Christensen of this city. She is survived by four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. Platz died July 27, 1919. The death of Mrs. Platz marks the passing of another pioneer, not many of whom are left in the land of the living, but at rest in the silent city of the dead. The sorrow of her family in her going is shared by a large circle of friends and neighbors, who, during the years, learned to know and to love her well.
