Arthur Frederick Pickard
Birth: Apr. 12, 1844
Death: Mar. 1, 1880

Maori Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Northamptonshire, England, he served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery Regiment, British Army. During the assault of Rangiriri, New Zealand, on November 20, 1863, at the entrance to the Maori Keep, the enemy concentrated their fire on the advancing Royal Artillery Regiment causing heavy casualties. When none of the men could be induced to perform their service, Lieutenant Pickard crossed and re-crossed the parapet to procure water for the wounded. He exposed himself to heavy enemy crossfire to render assistance to the wounded. For Gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on September 22, 1864. He later archived the rank of Colonel and was appointed Equerry to the Duke of Connaught and Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Victoria. He died of tuberculosis at 35 in Cannes, France. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
