AGED RESIDENT DIES
Dow Fonda VanDenbergh, one of this town's oldest residents, died at 8:30 o'clock on Wednesday morning, January 18th at his home on Andrews Street.
He had been in failing health for the past ten
years and for the past year his condition had rapidly
grown worse. He had been a great sufferer for many
weeks, being afflicted with a disease of the heart
Mr. VanDenbergh was a kind hearted genial man,
and had many friends. He was a member of the
Presbyterian Church. Although never prominently
identified with any public movement, Mr. VanDenbergh
took a lively interest in local affairs, as well as
in affairs of state.
Dow Fonda VanDenbergh was born October 25th,
1825, at Buskirk Bridge, Rensselear County, NY and therefore observed his 85th birthday anniversary
in October last.
He was the son of the late Jeannette and Peter VanDenbergh, and came to this part of the state
with them when only ten years of age.
The greater part of his life since that time
was spent in this town. In his early manhood he
resided for several years on a farm in South Bristol.
Mr. VanDenbergh was twice married, in 1846 he
married Elizabeth Rowley of this town. Her death
occurred in 1880, and in 1882, twenty-nine years ago,
he married Mrs. Rachel Andrews, a former resident of
Glens Falls, but a resident here at the time.
The latter survives. There are also four children
by the first marriage, Mrs. Edward Prosser of this town, Mrs. William Ketcham, East Rochester, Henry Jenner of
this village, and Charles VanDenbergh of St. Louis, Michigan, together with several grandchildren. One
brother also survives, John W. VanDenbergh. Boughton Hill Cemetery, Victor.
