| Birth: | Jan. 31, 1873 | | Death: | Apr. 13, 1915 | World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Chakarata, British India, he served as a Major in the 7th Hariana Lancers, Indian Army. On April 15, 1915, at Shariba, Mesopotamia, Major Wheeler led his squadron to attempt to capture a flag which was the centre point of a group of the enemy who were firing on one of their pickets. He advanced and attacked the enemy's infantry with the lance, causing the enemy to swarm out of hidden ground. He was next seen far ahead of his men, riding single-handed straight for the enemy's standards, when he was killed in the attack. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on August 31, 1915. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
