Birth: 1834
Jackson County
Alabama, USA
Death: Feb. 12, 1863
Rutherford County
Tennessee, USA

Joseph B. Sanders died near Murfreesboro in Tennessee while serving with the Union forces. His half-brothers, Henry A. Sanders and John G. Sanders also fought on the Union side but survived the war, as did Joseph's father-in-law, John Sanders, who left Alabama to serve in an Ohio unit. Joseph B. Sanders' seventy year old father, also named Joseph Sanders, was killed back home in Alabama by pro-Confederate bushwhackers two months after Joseph B. Sanders' death.

From Don Schaefer, editor of Sanders Siftings,October 2007:

I did not find a date for the marriage of Joseph B. Sanders and his first wife, Mary E. Davis. I got the name of his first wife from a petition filed by John Sanders, father of Mary Ann Sanders, second wife of Joseph B., when John was trying to get the land for Joseph B. G. Sanders that was his because of his mother's first marriage. This was on pages 533-34 of Will Book "N" in Jackson County, Alabama. In this petition it is stated that Joseph B. Sanders and Mary, his wife, had one child, B. G. Sanders, and Mary died leaving the child as her heir at law. Then the child died leaving Joseph B. Sanders his heir at law. Then, since that time Joseph B. Sanders intermarried with a Mary A. Sanders, etc. I have all those dates - marriage and birth of Joseph B. G. Sanders- in the pension application file of Mary A. Washburn, widow of Joseph B. Sanders. Mary was still living in June of 1876 in Indiana when the pension was denied. It is interesting, that in this pension file, John Sanders (the boy's grandfather), requested and receiving the guardianship of Joseph B. G. Sanders on 30 December 1972. On 6 May 1875 Mary A. Washburn of Marshall County, Indiana applied for and received the guardianship of Joseph B. G. Sanders.
