Grover Cleveland Shakespeare was born on November 6, 1895, at Panguitch, Garfield County, Utah. He was the sixth child of seven children born to David James Shakespeare and Maria Delight Dickinson.
Grover attended school in Panguitch and, on February 18, 1915, was married to Hattie Bell Wilcock of Spry, a native of Parowan in Iron County. They made their first home in Panguitch and lived there for a number of years.
Grover and Hattie Bell were happy in Panguitch and it was there that their first three children were born, Karl Grover on February 26, 1915, Idona on July 12, 1916 and Vera on August 15, 1918.
In 1925 Grover was called to the Southern States Mission under Charles A. Callis. He was assigned to Alabama where he labored under Sterling W. Sill as a district leader for quite some time. In May of 1927, tow month prior to completing his mission, he was called home as his wife had developed a serious heart ailment. Dr. Bigelow, the family doctor in Panguitch, suggested that she should be taken to Salt Lake City to a specialist, so Grover took her there. She was in Salt Lake City for five weeks before being released. The doctor in Salt Lake City suggested that it would be best for the family to seek a lower and warmer climate.
In 1928, in accordance with the doctor's suggestion, the Shakespeare family moved to St. George, Washington County, Utah. Grover and Hattie Bell were thrilled over the birth of their twin daughters there on December 23, 1928. They named them Pauline and Colleen. Happiness turned to sorrow just five months later when, on May 1, 1929, Hattie Bell passed away in St. George, having never recovered from her heart condition.
In 1930, Grover married Delna Bulloch in the St. George Temple. To that union, seven children were born, five sons and two daughters. The youngest son, James was burned to death at the age of three years. The other children were Stanley, David, Thomas, Steven, Rose Marie and Mary.
