Smith M. Dulin was the son of Lewis, Jr. & Clemence (Spenny) Dulin. Smith grew up on the family farm of his parents in Norwich Township, Franklin County, OH. On August 5, 1862, Smith enlisted in the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was assigned to Company A along with his older brother Samaritan A. Dulin and a brother-in-law, Thomas M. Armstrong. Smith saw service with the 95th OVI at the Siege of Vicksburg, MS; the Siege of Jackson, MS; the Battle of Brice's Crossroads (a.k.a. the "Battle of Guntown, MS"); the Battle Tupelo, MS; and the Battle of Nashville, TN. Smith spent most of his military time as the "company cook." Smith was never married and lived in numerous locations after the Civil War including Howard City, MI; Indianapolis, IN; Franklin County, OH; Montgomery County, OH; and Darke County, OH. Smith's final Civil War pension declaration was filed in 1912 from Champaign County, OH, where his brother Samaritan and several other relatives had been residing.
