Homer O. Banta Succumbs at 86

SAN LEANDRO – Funeral rites were conducted here today for Homer Oscar Banta, charter member of San Leandro Rotary Club and last surviving member of the Fresno Volunteer Fire Dept.

Mr. Banta died Saturday at Fairmont Hospital at the age of 86.

Formerly employed at the Fairmont Hospital laundry, he retired seven years ago.

Mr. Banta was a charter member of the Fresno Volunteer Fire Dept. founded in 1876. He was then (unreadable).

At age 19, he was pioneering in Alaska, where he was a member of the White Pass lodge No. 113 F&AM in Skagway and the Alaska Consistory of the Scottish Rite. He was also a member of the Nile Temple in Seattle, Wash.

A native of Indiana, he had been a resident of California for 7 years.

Husband of the late Florence Ann Banta, he is survived by one son, Warren C. Banta of San Mateo and two sisters, Mrs. Emma Harris of Fresno, and Mae McRay, Roseville. One granddaughter, Mary Ann Banta of San Mateo also survives.

Services at Santos Robinson Chapel, 10 Estudillo Ave., at 3:30 p.m. concluded with the inurnment in Chapel of Chimes.
