LORAIN - Catherine M. Rado, 78, of Lorain passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home, Avon after a brief illness.
Miss Rado was born on October 26, 1934 in the Hungarian settlement of Budapest, located in Haralson County, Georgia and came to Lorain in 1936 at the age of two with her family and remained a Lorain resident. She was a 1953 graduate of Lorain High School.
Catherine began work in the banking industry the day after graduation and was employed by Lorain National Bank from 1953 through 1970. In 1970 she accepted a position with Euclid National Bank, later Winters Corporation, in Cleveland. She retired from the Trust Operations Department of Bank One - Cleveland in October of 1996 with 43 years in the banking field.
Catherine was a member of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church and a former longtime member of Saint Ladislaus Catholic Church until its closing where she had served as a reader and was a member of the Finance Committee. She enjoyed attending mass daily at St. Frances and attending Bible Study. Catherine also attended the Ladies Bible Study Group at the Amherst Foursquare Church as well. She then began volunteering with Mercy Regional Medical Center at the Out-Patient Surgery Welcome Desk and later worked at the hospital's Thrift Store on West 21st Street until becoming ill in April of this year. Catherine was one of Lorain's own "ladies in Blue" for nearly 40 years as a member of the Polish legion of American Veterans ladies Drill Team having joined in 1955. She also belonged to the P.L.A.V. ladies Auxiliary having served as its President. For years she volunteered with P.L.A.V. Post #38 at Wade Park V.A. Hospital, Brecksville V.A. Hospital and the Sandusky Soldiers and Sailors Home and was a longtime member of the V.A.V.S. (Veterans Administration Volunteer Services). Catherine was a cancer survivor having battled colorectal cancer in 2007 and bounced back to return to her volunteer work. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing cards as well as cooking and baking which she shared with family and friends. Catherine enjoyed polka music and attending the weekly area dances in years past.
Surviving are her sister, Elizabeth A. "Betty" (Roy) Conley of Lorain; nephew Joseph F. (Barbara) Conley of Lorain, nieces Susan J. (Gordon) Mellen of Amherst and Patricia Cendrosky of Lorain; 5 great-nieces and nephews Maggie Conley, Adam and Andrew Mellen, and Lauren Cendrosky and Joseph Cendrosky.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents Albert J. "Red" Rado in 1960 and Pauline (née Estavanko) Rado in 1993; and an infant sister Helen Rado in 1931.
Visitation for Catherine will on Sunday, September 22nd from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain with a memorial service to be conducted by the P.L.A.V. Ladies Auxiliary at 5:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial Monday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive in Lorain, OH 44055 (**please meet at church). Rev. Father James P. Schmitz, Pastor of St. Stephen Catholic Church, West Salem officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Mother Cabrini's Food Cupboard c/o St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Church.
