On August 16, 1861, Joseph enlisted for service during the Civil War. He mustered in on September 21 as a Sargeant, Company C, 4th Vermont Volunteers. He was discharged because of disability on May 10, 1862. He entered service again as a 1st Lieutenant in Company E of the 16th Vermont on September 1, 1862 and mustered out August 10, 1863.
Joseph's death was attributed to "disease contracted in the army."
