Richard Dale Smeltzer, 86, of Springfield died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2008, at St. John's Hospice.

He was born June 26, 1922, in Salt Lake City, the son of Lawrence and Julia Morgan Smeltzer. He married Colette Marie Swyndro on Dec. 1, 1944.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Colette Marie Smeltzer of Springfield; two sons, Dennis Smeltzer of Kankakee and Richard Smeltzer of Naperville; six grandchildren, Karen, Pamela, Anne, Caroline, Christine and Michael, and three great-grandchildren.

He worked as a professional engineer for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation for 35 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran aviation machinist and scoutmaster at St. Mary's School in Paris and a member of Christ the King Church, St. John's Samaritans, American Legion in Paris and the Sunday Flyers

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 5 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Christ the King Church, with Msgr. David Lantz officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Samaritans.
