New Zealand Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Birr, Ireland, he served as a Sergeant in the 68th Regiment of Foot, British Army. At Tauranga, New Zealnad, June 21, 1864, when the enemy's position was being stormed, Sergeant Murray ran up to the trench line containing eight to ten of the enemy. Without any assistance, he killed or wounded all of them. He then went on up the forward line fighting with his bayonet. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He died in Derrinlogh, Ireland.
